Michael Owen backs Liverpool for title glory

Ex-Liverpool striker Michael Owen believes that his former club will come out on top in this season’s Premier League title battle.

The Reds are shock leaders with just five games to play on the back of an excellent campaign and know that if they win their remaining fixtures they will end Anfield’s 24 year wait for English football’s biggest prize.

Liverpool will take on major contenders Manchester City this Sunday, with many tipping the Sky Blues to come out on top thanks to their two ties in hand.

Owen – who scored over 100 goals for the Merseysiders after emerging from their youth academy – is hopeful that his old side can go all the way this term, and praised Brendan Rodgers’ bold attacking tactics:

“My heart says Liverpool and I hope they win it. But regardless if they do, it’s great to see them back at the top of their game again. It’s great to see Anfield rocking.” He is quoted by the Daily Star.

“Lots of teams have got good players but Brendan Rodgers has managed to tweak formations and get the best out of them.

“Not many teams go with two strikers up front for fear of having a weakened midfield. Half the time they put a striker out on the left wing in a position they don’t really enjoy or are not used to.”

Having been one of the Kop’s favourite strikers in his playing days, Owen knows a thing or two about wowing the Liverpool crowd, and he believes that current hit-man Luis Suarez has been the best in the league this season:

“In Suarez, they’ve got best striker in the league since Thierry Henry.

“It’s interesting that when you analyse him there’s not one thing I think is a standout.

“He’s not blessed with Henry pace and he’s not a big lad that knocks defenders about. He’s an all-round phenomenal player that scores goals with both feet and his head.

“He’s just got virtually everything.”
