Misfiring Liverpool striker prepared to stay and fight for his place

Misfiring Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli has reportedly informed Reds boss Brendan Rodgers he wants to stay and fight for his place at the Anfield club, according to the Guardian.

The 24-year-old – who signed for the Reds for £16 million from AC Milan in August – has made a disastrous start to his Liverpool career, scoring just twice and failing to find the net once in the Premier League. The controversial Italian last started a game for the club on 8 November, and after Rodgers admitted that the former Manchester City forward does not suit his side’s intense, high-pressing style of play, many believed that his days on Merseyside were numbered.

However, Balotelli is willing to remain at Liverpool and try and force his way back into the starting eleven, while Rodgers has also insisted that the Italian is going nowhere, despite reported interest from Serie A leaders Juventus.

“Yes. There is a lot of speculation about Mario but in January he is a player we want to still have here. We want as many good players as we can between now and the end of the season. He is not one we want to move,” Rodgers said.

Liverpool face Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday, where Balotelli is expected to start on the bench.
