Liverpool are considering a move for Cagliari midfielder Nicolo Barella, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, as cited in The Mirror.

What's the story?

The 21-year-old midfielder is a product of the Cagliari academy and is considered one of the brightest young Italian prospects in Serie A.

Last season, he made 34 appearances for the senior team, scoring six goals and registering one assist.

Barella plays either as a central midfielder or an attacking midfielder and according to the report, Jurgen Klopp is eyeing up a move for the talented youngster, although Inter Milan, Roma, Atletico Madrid and Lyon are also interested in signing him this summer.

Is it likely?

There is no doubt that Barella is a serious talent and by the list of clubs interested in him, he would be a class acquisition for most big European clubs.

However, central midfield is one area which Klopp has invested heavily in this summer, and Barella would find it hard to get a look in with Naby Keita and Fabinho ahead in the pecking order in terms of a central midfield position, while the German boss would save himself some money by putting his faith in Adam Lallana in the attacking midfield role.

Barella is valued at £22.5million on Transfermarkt and it would likely take significantly more than that to prise him away from Cagliari because of his age and promise.
