Not replacing club idol is Liverpool’s problem, says ex-star

Stephane Henchoz believes that not replacing the influence of Jamie Carragher has been a major factor in Liverpool’s defensive woes.

The Reds have made a stuttering start to the current season, with defeats at the hands of Aston Villa and West Ham having left them some way off of the pace after just six games.

Problems at the back ultimately cost the Merseysiders a first ever Premier League title last term, as their 50 goals conceded came back to haunt them late on in the race for the top prize.

Prior to the title push, club idol Carragher had called time on his long and successful career at Anfield after spending much of his last campaign with the club in the starting XI despite his advancing years.

Since his retirement Dejan Lovren has been brought in to play alongside Martin Skrtel, but the duo have been shaky alongside rookie full-backs Javier Manquillo and Alberto Moreno.

And Henchoz – who formed an iconic partnership with Sami Hyypia during his time in the red shirt – believes that his old side really miss ‘Carra’:

“One of the main problems as a back four is that they have two new guys playing at full-back, along with Lovren,” he told talkSPORT.

“Skrtel is the only one who has some experience at Liverpool. They don’t have a natural leader.

“Since Jamie Carragher retired, they haven’t had that natural leader at the back. It’s a problem.”
