Liverpool looked almost certain to secure a deal for Nabil Fekir this summer, but the Reds can go one better by splashing the cash on another Lyon star - Houssem Aouar.

What's the story?

Liverpool fans are desperate for a midfielder that can create from deep, as all of Jurgen Klopp’s current midfield options are primarily workhorses.

The injury to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and the collapse of the move for Fekir means the Reds simply don’t have a creator in midfield, and the front three have suffered due to the lack of service coming their way.

Aouar is only 20, but is already showing signs of becoming the next superstar off the Lyon production line, with an impressive mixture of vision, technique and an absolutely tireless work rate.

The missing piece of the puzzle?

It is perhaps no surprise that Klopp tried to do some shopping at Lyon this summer, as their high-tempo style means players should be able to transition easily into Liverpool’s gegenpressing.

Aouar has been a fixture in the side this season, and his ability to play anywhere across the midfield would be a huge boost to Klopp’s options.

He is best as a left sided central midfielder with the freedom to roam forward, exactly the position that Philippe Coutinho occupied before his departure to Barcelona.

The 20 year-old has scored twice and added two assists this season, and is averaging an impressive 2.5 shots, 1.1 key passes and 1.2 successful dribbles per game.

His close control and balance allows him to dribble out of tight spaces, and his excellent vision and intelligence at such a young age would help create chances for the Reds’ stuttering front three.

Aouar isn’t all silky dribbling and pretty passing though. He is averaging 1.5 tackles per game this season, more than Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita and Georginio Wijnaldum.

If Klopp is after a creative midfielder who can press tirelessly and spring counter attacks with both his passing and dribbling, then Aouar could be the perfect solution.
