Liverpool are absolutely crying out for another centre back to provide depth and experience, so why not make a shock move for former Red Martin Skrtel?
It sounds ridiculous, we know. Skrtel was rash, worse on the ball than the current Reds’ centre backs, and he certainly isn’t getting any younger.
However, with his contract with Fenerbahce set to expire next summer, a short-term deal for the feisty 33 year-old actually makes a lot of sense.
The Reds are without Joe Gomez and Joel Matip for the busy festive period, and although they are expected to return in January it will still be difficult to compete on three fronts with just four centre backs, three of which are injury-prone.
Skrtel would cost a nominal fee thanks to his age and contract situation, and he would not be arriving to start immediately, merely to provide extra depth in the same way that Ragnar Klavan did last season.

Liverpool could sign him to an 18-month deal in January, and his passion, leadership and trophy-winning experience could provide a huge boost to what is a very young Reds’ squad.
The Slovakian international racked up over 300 appearances for Liverpool, and if he allows Jurgen Klopp to safely rotate the likes of Gomez and Virgil van Dijk then he could be the perfect signing.
Liverpool fans know more than most what Skrtel’s weak points are, and he will definitely have to tone down his shirt-tugging once VAR is introduced, but there’s also no question that he knows how to defend, at least as well as Dejan Lovren does.
Bringing Skrtel back to the Premier League would raise quite a few eyebrows, but signing a fifth choice centre back with over 100 caps for a nominal fee is good business for any side, no matter the circumstances.
So, Liverpool fans, is this a good idea? Skrtel was hugely popular at Anfield, so could he return to be your new Klavan? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…
