Liverpool are crying out for a midfielder with the vision and technique to supply chances for their front three, and Jurgen Klopp should shake up the Premier League by moving for title rival Ilkay Gundogan.

What's the word?

Liverpool’s ferocious attacking trio is taking loads of stick for failing to reach the remarkable standards they set last season, but if truth be told most of the blame should be on the midfield.

The likes off James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum simply aren’t positive enough, and by the time the attackers get the ball they have their back to goal with several defenders around them.

Gundogan could be the missing link to get the trio firing again, and there’s absolutely no way the German international would turn down the chance to work with Klopp again.

Gundogan racked up over 100 Bundesliga appearances for Klopp at Borussia Dortmund, transforming into one of the finest midfield talents in Europe.

His quick thinking and excellent technique means he always has time to look forward and find an incisive pass, which is likely why Pep Guardiola was so desperate to sign him for Manchester City.

He also has the energy and work rate to function in a high-tempo pressing system, something he has already proven under both Klopp and Guardiola.

The 28 year-old can play numerous positions in the midfield, and could be perfect as the creative influence alongside the box-to-box presence of Naby Keita and defensive dominance of Fabinho.

Klopp made it clear in the summer that he was desperate for a more creative midfielder (Nabil Fekir) to play alongside his workhorses, and Gundogan’s relationship with the boss means he could slot into the team almost immediately.

While he has only started four Premier League games this season, Manchester City would no doubt command a big fee for the midfielder. If the Reds are serious to about winning the title though, they must pull out all the stops in January to solve Klopp’s midfield conundrum.
