Liverpool striker Divock Origi rejected the chance to join Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer transfer window, according to the Liverpool Echo.

What's the word?

After spending last season on loan at Wolfsburg, Origi's future at Anfield looked uncertain.

Jurgen Klopp's dynamic trio of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane are unlikely to be dislodged from their starting positions.

On top of that, Daniel Sturridge impressed the manager in pre-season, which suggests that Origi is even further down the pecking order.

English clubs are no longer permitted to sign players on permanent deals, and it has since been reported by the Liverpool Echo that Wolves tabled a £22m offer plus add-ons.

The publication states that Origi turned down the opportunity as he was not keen on moving to Molineux.

The same newspaper claims that Borussia Dortmund are now leading the race for the striker's signature, which the club value at £27m.

That is a far cry from Transfermarkt's figure of £9m.

Has Origi made a mistake?

Wolves are certainly riding the crest of a wave as they stormed to Premier League promotion last season.

Nuno Espirito Santo's side have experienced some disappointment in the early stages of the 2018-19 campaign as they were beaten 2-0 by Leicester City at the weekend.

Their opening match, though, ended in a 2-2 draw with Everton, but they may have had a better start if Origi was in the lineup.

It is clear that the Belgian is not quite up to Liverpool standard, but he could thrive at Wolves as they try to retain their top-flight status.

The appeal of playing for a club that could end up back in the Championship this time next year may not be huge for Origi, but he has thrown away an opportunity to be a hero.

At a top European club, there is a chance that the striker would end up being a squad player.
