Ousted star backs Liverpool for title

Out of favour Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina believes that the Reds have the more desirable end of season fixtures in the hunt for the Premier League title.

The Merseyside giants are shock contenders for English football’s top prize after an impressive second season under the guidance of Brendan Rodgers.

Liverpool were not considered to be in the race at the start of the campaign, but thanks to the form of Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and the evergreen Steven Gerrard they find themselves just four points behind leaders Chelsea – whom they have a game in hand on – with nine fixtures left to play.

Rodgers’ side also host the table toppers and fellow candidates for the trophy Manchester City over the closing months as they look to secure a first ever Premier League crown.

Reina – currently on loan at Napoli – feels that his parent club have the best run in of the sides in the battle and that the fans now believe they can go all the way:

“People now believe they can win the Premier League title,” he told talkSPORT.

“The demonstration of football against Man United was the best signal so far they can win the league.

“The fixtures are also a little bit easier for them than the other teams. Winning 3-0 at Old Trafford, even against a struggling Man United side, is never easy.”

Reina was a key member of the 2008/09 squad that narrowly missed out on the title to Manchester United.
