Liverpool should make a surprise move for Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic after BBC reporter Simon Stone confirmed that Manchester United are not currently pursuing a deal.

What's the word?

Perisic has been linked with the Red Devils for some time, but nothing has materialised in terms of a transfer.

That remains the case after Simon Stone reported on his Twitter account that Jose Mourinho's club have not made any approaches.

Liverpool have had a positive summer window, and have made a real statement of intent with some of the signings they have already secured.

The Merseyside outfit have strengthened the midfielder with the arrivals of Fabinho and Naby Keita, while Xherdan Shaqiri is another option to use in attack.

The standout capture so far, though, has been goalkeeper Alisson, who is now the most expensive shot-stopper in the world following a £67m switch from Roma.

There is no pressing need for manager Jurgen Klopp to dip into the market three days before it slams shut, but signing Perisic would blow Liverpool's competitors out of the water.

Why would this be a good deal?

If there were any hesitations about Perisic's ability due to the fact that he is approaching 30, he brushed them away by putting in some impressive performances at the World Cup.

The winger played a key role in Croatia reaching the final of the showpiece, but ultimately he was unable to help them lift the trophy as the nation lost to France in Russia.

Perisic, who is valued at £40.5m by Transfermarkt, showcased his skills on the global stage, and Liverpool would certainly benefit from having him in their ranks.

The 29-year-old has bundles of energy and the ability to play anywhere across the front three, although his most comfortable position is on the left wing.

Shaqiri has arrived to provide competition on the right-hand side, and a signing of Perisic's quality would keep Sadio Mane on is toes.
