Please stay, Sterling: Liverpool face battle to secure star man’s future

The Sunday Mirror are reporting that Liverpool star Raheem Sterling’s contract talks have reached an impasse.

The England international has turned down a second offer from the Anfield club to extend a deal that still has two years remaining.

The Reds were confident of securing Sterling’s contract extension by the end of January following captain Steven Gerrard’s announcement that he would be leaving the club for the MLS in the summer, however an agreement is still a long way off.

Liverpool’s opening offer of a £70,000 per week deal – double Sterling’s current wages – was rejected by the player, and it is believed that only an offer in excess of £100,00-a-week will be enough to convince the 20 year-old to sign.

Spanish giants Real Madrid have been linked with a big-money move for Sterling.

The Reds forward has seven goals to his name this season, the most recent coming in Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea in the Capital One Cup semi-final at Anfield.
