Southampton captain Jose Fonte has signed a new deal at St. Mary’s that will see him remain on the South Coast until 2018, according to BT Sport.
The Portuguese international has been a stalwart for the Saints as they have enjoyed a meteoric rise from League One to becoming major players in the top tier of English football.
The 31-year old joined the South Coast outfit in 2010, in a £1m deal from Crystal Palace and has flourished at the heart of their defence.
He is set to make his 240th appearance against Leicester this weekend, and has previously been linked with a switch to Liverpool after his sterling form in the Premier League.
However, he has put pen to paper – adding an extra year on to his previous deal that was due to end in 2017.
Appointed skipper by Ronald Koeman last season, he the Southampton bastion led the club to their highest ever finish in the Premier League, coming in at seventh place.
