Premier League giants watch over Charlton youngster

England u16s vs Wales u16sA host of Premier League teams are interested in signing Charlton Athletic youngster Joe Gomez, according to the Daily Mail.

Gomez was in action last night, putting in a solid shift for the England U16s, as they recorded a 1-0 victory over Wales at Port Talbot.

The young defender was involved from the offset, as the Three Lions’ goal withstood early pressure from Wales U16s. In the second half, the Charlton man nearly got himself on the score-sheet with a powerful effort that was cleared of the line during a goalmouth scramble.

Soon after, Denzil Boadu charged down the left flank and pulled his cross back to Chelsea’s Dominic Solanke, who applied a clinical finish to claim the deciding goal for England in the 54th minute.

It is believed that top scouts from Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal attended the game to monitor the teenager’s performance. The potential wonder-kid has been described as a speedy centre-back with the ability to pass the ball.

Charlton’s academy is well known for producing talented youngsters. Jonjo Shelvey and Carl Jenkinson are two recent academy graduates who have moved on to greater things at Liverpool and Arsenal respectively, and have been in contention for places in the England senior squad.

Manchester United’s Sean McGinty, who is currently on loan at Oxford United, spent three years with the Red Robins before moving to Old Trafford in 2011.

Gomez is yet to make a first team appearance for Charlton, but the player’s ability has been labelled as “off the scale”.

The teenage prodigy has become a regular for the Addicks’ Under 18s, despite being just 15-years-old, and has also featured for the Charlton’s development squad this season.

Currently, Chelsea and Liverpool are leading the race for the hot prospect’s signature, however Charlton remain confident that Gomez will decide to stay at The Valley and sign a professional contract once legible. Should the youngster decide to leave, the Addicks will be entitled to compensation.
