Liverpool spent a staggering £100m over the summer on new first-team stars in an attempt to build on an impressive second placed finish in the Premier League. Okay, £75m was recouped through the sale of Luis Suarez, but that’s a massive outlay on players, who should be key men at Anfield.

But today Brendan Rodgers has dropped a number of his arrivals to the bench, with stemming the flow of defeats – four in their last five – clearly on the Northern Irishman’s mind. Dejan Lovren, Adam Lallana, Lazar Markovic, Alberto Moreno and Emre Can are all in reserve against Stoke… while former freebie Kolo Toure starts!
