When reports earlier this week revealed that Liverpool are planning to extend goalkeeper Simon Mignolet’s contract, many Reds fans were left somewhat bemused.
The Belgium international has certainly divided opinion since joining the Merseyside ranks from Sunderland, at a cost of £9million, in summer 2013.
Although his status as the Anfield outfit’s No.1 has never come under serious threat , in no small part due to a lack of genine competition, the fact the jury’s still out on whether the 27-year-old has what it takes to be a first-choice goalkeeper at a club as big as Liverpool after two-and-a-half-years there speaks volumes.
But Jurgen Klopp has insisted he’s more than happy with the 6 foot 4 shot-stopper manning the Anfield sticks, recently describing him as “one of the smartest [goalkeepers] I have ever had,” and one of the latest statistics doing the rounds on Twitter suggests the Liverpool gaffer may have a point.

Indeed, no top flight goalkeeper has made more saves than Mignolet over the last five seasons. So regardless of public opinion, he must be doing something right!
