Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood has claimed that Joe Gomez is currently Liverpool's best centre-back.

The 20-year-old impressed during his full England debut on Tuesday night as he helped the Three Lions keep a clean sheet against Brazil.

Gomez is highly-regarded at Anfield, but has mainly been used at right-back despite Liverpool's problems at the heart of the defence.

Sherwood has said that the former Charlton Athletic youngster is comfortably Liverpool's best option at centre-back, but the pundit has suggested that the likes of Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip will remain ahead of Gomez in the pecking order with the Reds.

Sherwood told Sky Sports:

"If you asked me who the best centre-half is at Liverpool at the moment, I'd tell you Joe Gomez. But is he going to get an opportunity to play ahead of some other players - I'd suggest he's going to get limited game time."

Gomez, who is valued at £7.2m by transfermarkt.co.uk, has made 12 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions since the start of the 2017-18 campaign.

He has started at right-back in eight of his nine league appearances this term, and is expected to continue in that position against Southampton on Saturday afternoon.
