Liverpool's defensive resilience has been called into question at times this season but there is no doubt that Jurgen Klopp makes exacting demands on his players.

His high-pressing style is geared around winning the ball high up the pitch, in areas where Liverpool will already be dangerous from the moment they recover possession.

That places a huge emphasis on tackling and interceptions; every player - from front to back - has a duty to try their utmost to get the ball back. Being passive in defence isn't an option.

Football FanCast wanted to have a look over the numbers to see whether the numbers shed any light on Klopp's style, which appears to create a great deal of individual duels for his players to win.

On top of that, we wanted to see which of Klopp's players comes out on top of the rankings and there are a couple of surprising names among the top five...

Moreno was not trusted by Klopp last season, as the German preferred playing James Milner out of position at left-back ahead of him.

This time around, summer signing Andy Robertson has usurped the Spaniard at left-back, as he marries attacking adventure with greater defensive stability.

Nevertheless, Moreno's exuberant style has seen him make enough tackles during his limited gametime to take his place on this list. It is fair to say the four-cap Spain man is giving it his all to impress Klopp when he gets his opportunity.

Robertson's arrival has freed Milner up to take up his place among Klopp's central midfield options and get more gametime in his favoured position.

While he has not been a guaranteed starter - and the impending summer arrival of Naby Keita will only push the Yorkshireman further down the pecking order - Milner's all-action style has seen him make enough challenges to take his place on this list.

Maybe the season he spent playing as a full-back has sharpened his defensive instincts.

Gomez has struggled with injury problems since Brendan Rodgers brought him to Anfield but this season has been something of a breakthrough season for the former Charlton man.

He was man of the match when Manchester United visited Anfield in September and his form has been so good that he earned an England call-up in November.

Tackling has clearly formed a large part of this impressive season and he is the highest-ranked defender on this list.

Firmino is vitally important to this Liverpool team because of his work ethic. A centre-forward coming second in the tackling stakes is quite remarkable, however.

Klopp quickly identified the Brazilian as the man who could lead his press, as the first defender, when he arrived at Anfield and the stats bear out just how well he performs that role for the Redmen.

Mo Salah has picked up more headlines after his astonishing breakthrough season but Firmino - valued at £45m by Transfermarkt - is just as important to this Liverpool team.

Liverpool still lack a disciplined, out and out holding midfielder but Can is the closest they have right now.

These stats show that he is not worried about putting his foot in and making challenges to get the ball back, just maybe sometimes his positioning lets him down slightly.

However, these figures show that Can would be a big loss in terms of recovering the ball if he does leave the club in the summer, with his contract situation still unresolved.
