Liverpool hero John Barnes has defended Anfield manager Brendan Rodgers’ comments surrounding a ‘media agenda’ against him and likened his situation to that of now sacked Manchester United manager David Moyes.
The Kop boss has been under a vast level of pressure of late, with his side’s four-game winless Premier League run and 1-1 draw with League Two Carlisle United in the Capital One Cup – a game the Reds won on penalties – having brought the critics of his 2014/15 campaign to the fore.
Liverpool registered a much-needed win against Aston Villa last weekend, but reports continue to link the club with managers such as Jurgen Klopp, with Rodgers’ position far from secure.

The former Swansea tactician hit out at the voices in the media after beating the Villans, claiming that there is an ‘agenda’ against him, and TitanBet brand ambassador Barnes has sympathy for the Merseyside gaffer, drawing comparisons with Moyes’ plight – his United reign was filled with negative comments from pundits and ex-professionals:
“I don’t think the pressure has got to him,†he said. “I think there are people [out to get him], but I don’t know for what reason.
“In football there are always agendas. There was an agenda against David Moyes, in my opinion, from people connected with the club and from the media.
“What’s very apparent now is that if you don’t like a manager you can call for his head, which a lot of people seem to be doing.
“I don’t know who he [Rodgers] means, but it wouldn’t surprise me if there was. I don’t know if it’s a media agenda, but he’ll have more of an idea than I do.
“As far as I’m concerned it’s been unfair, the criticism of him and the calls for his head.â€
