Liverpool fans will be more than happy with new goalkeeper Simon Mignolet – the £9million signing from Sunderland has kept three clean sheets in his first three Premier League starts for the Reds, including a last-minute penalty save against Stoke on his debut.
But Brendan Rodgers was also keen to bring in veteran shot-stopper Shay Given on deadline day to replace current goalie understudy Brad Jones, who can’t seem to manage a full 90 minutes without conceding at least one goal spawned from an individual error.
The former Newcastle and Man City ‘keeper is one of the most experienced in the Premier League, with 440 top flight appearances under his belt, and 125 caps for the Ireland national team.
The 37 year-old was also available for a nominal fee, having been usurped from the first team at current club Aston Villa by Brad Guzan, and the Birmingham outfit keen to get the high-earner off the wage bill.
But a move never materialised, and it seems Given will be rotting in the Villa reserves until January at least.
