Xherdan Shaqiri surprised many when he joined Stoke City from Inter Milan in 2015 but the Swiss ace could have found himself down a completely different path, had Bayern Munich not stood in the way of his wishes two years ago.
Shaqiri struggled to find his feet in Bavaria, although he won everything he could, and endured the same struggles in Milan. At Stoke, Shaqiri has experienced better fortune but he could have found himself at Anfield, had things panned out the way he wanted.
Quoted by Football Italia, Shaqiri revealed he wanted to join Liverpool in 2014 and had held talks with then manager Brendan Rodgers.
“That summer, I had offers from Liverpool and Atletico Madrid. I wanted to leave Bayern at all costs. I decided to join Liverpool, Brendan Rodgers had already called me a couple of times before the World Cup, but Bayern stopped me.”
“The Bayern directors thought that the situation would change, but it didn’t. Gianluca Gaudino was preferred to me in the first game. This was, of course, a signal for me, in that I didn’t understand why they wanted to keep me at all costs.”
“Inter? They simply tried for me the most. They promised me a new Inter. In the Bundesliga, I’d already won everything.”
Had Shaqiri moved to Anfield two-years ago, he could have been the missing link that the Reds lacked in their push for the Premier League title. Nowadays though, Liverpool fans may feel they have better options within their ranks.
