Kicking off this list is one of the most underrated midfielders in the Premier League – Southampton’s toughest tackler Morgan Schneiderlin.
The Frenchman joined the south coast outfit during their brief League One days and after progressing through the English third and second tiers with them contributed a vital five goals to the Saints’ Premier League survival bid last season.
Despite Southampton enjoying a top half finish this season, the 24 year-old hasn’t been able to match that potency from the middle of the park, but his average of 3.5 successful challenges per match – in addition to 2.1 interceptions – is the third-best tackling return in the Premier League.
Influential on the ball too, Schneiderlin’s 58.2 passes per match is the most of any player on the Southampton roster, whilst his pass completion rate of 89.2% is equally impressive.
Measuring in at just 5 foot 11, the former France U21 doesn’t offer much in the way of aerial cover, but his tremendous work-ethic and quality on the deck more than makes up for it.
Schneiderlin has been mooted with a big Premier League move before, with the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal often listed in the tabloids as his potential suitors.
But rated at £10million and recently insisting he has no intentions to leave Southampton this summer, prizing him away from St. Mary’s could be a surprisingly difficult task.
