Martin Montoya

Top of the list of La Liga youngsters in Brendan Rodgers’ transfer thinking has to be Barcelona defender Martin Montoya.

The 22 year-old impressed in a cameo role of the Catalans last season, racking up 24 first team appearances and scoring one incredible goal in the process (check it out on Youtube).

He was also an integral member of a La Rojita side that claimed back-to-back European Championships in 2011 and 2013, and has maintained his high level of performance in six La Liga starts this term, averaging 2.9 tackles and 1.1 successful dribbles per game.

But regular runs in the starting XI will be hard to come by for the right-back whilst Dani Alves is still going strong, and as a result, Montoya has refused to extend his current contract at the Nou Camp, which winds down at the end of the season.

Therefore, Liverpool are hoping to snap up the highly-rated Spaniard in January, with the La Liga champions fearing losing one of their most talented youngsters for nothing in six months’ time.

There’s no doubt Montoya would be a fantastic coup for the Reds, but they’ll be up against a wealth of competition for his signature, namely from Arsenal and Tottenham.
