Pre-season fixtures tend to be platforms for players to regain fitness rather than indicators of who will perform well in the upcoming season.

Some Liverpool fans have seemingly got a little bit carried away with the quality of young Harry Wilson.

The 21-year-old is yet to be given a chance under manager Jurgen Klopp, but he did impress during a short loan spell at Hull City last season.

Wilson was given the chance to impress the Liverpool boss on Saturday as he was selected to play in the club's first pre-season fixture of the schedule.

The youngster, who predominantly plays on the right wing but can also switch to the left or play centrally, scored the Reds' opening two goals against Chester.

Klopp's side kicked off their pre-season campaign with a 7-0 triumph, and after watching Wilson's display, some fans have questioned the club's rumoured pursuit of Stoke City's Xherdan Shaqiri.

Last Thursday, the Liverpool Echo reported that the Merseyside outfit are interested in signing the Switzerland international, who can be bought for around £13.5m due to a clause in his contract, but they have not yet made an official approach.

Some Liverpool fans have told the club not to bother.
