Spanish giants want Liverpool star

Liverpool could have to fend off interest from Atletico Madrid to keep Luis Suarez at the club this summer, according to reports from MARCA.

The Kop idol has been in fantastic form this season after agitating for a move away from Anfield last year, and currently leads the way in the Premier League for both goals and assists.

Although Real Madrid have widely been hailed as favourites to lure him away from Merseyside, it now appears that city rivals Atletico are also keen.

The news comes in the wake of a discarded list of player’s names being found in a restaurant after officials from the club had met with major sponsors to talk through potential targets for the next transfer window.

The document also contained details of a number of other stars – predominantly based in Spain – but Suarez was the standout name.

It is thought that Atletico are preparing for the possibility of Diego Costa’s exit, and are lining up top players to replace their talismanic front-man.

Suarez is seen to have quality needed, but doubts remain as to whether or not the Vicente Calderon outfit can afford to steal him away from Liverpool given that his release clause is thought to be worth over £60m.

However, reports do suggest that Atletico will have vast funds available to them over the summer courtesy of major sponsors in Azerbaijan.
