Brendan Rodgers’ side want to make a move for the £10m rated Spaniard, who is likely to leave the cash-strapped Portuguese club in the summer, along with several others, as the Lisbon club try to bring in more revenue.
The 25-year-old winger moved to Sporting in 2011 after training in Barcelona’s celebrated youth ranks, followed by a seven-year stretch at Sevilla. In 45 appearances for Sporting, the Spain international has scored six goals, and Liverpool hope that bringing him to Merseyside will make them more competitive in the race for Champions League places and the title.
The Reds, currently in the process of rebuilding, have been considering a move for Capel for some time, but Sporting, desperate to raise funds, have reportedly lowered his asking price. Rumours suggest the Portuguese club offered a deal to Tottenham for as little as £5m in March.
