Stewart Downing in shock Boro return

Liverpool midfielder Stewart DowningStewart Downing could be given a chance of regular first team football after Middlesbrough have said they will offer the midfielder a return to his home town in a loan deal, according to Sky Sports.

The 28-year-old has failed to hold down a regular first team place at Liverpool FC since Brendan Rodgers took charge and it is thought that he wants regular football in order to keep his place in the England squad. Boro are keen to tie up a deal as soon as possible, with Thursday’s loan deadline looming.

Former Real Madrid and Spurs star Jonathan Woodgate returned to his Middlesbrough this summer with the call from his home town club seemingly impossible to resist. The board at the Riverside hope to persuade Downing in the same vein, hoping that 6 months of first team football in the Championship will persuade the winger.

Downing was a graduate of the famous Middlesbrough academy, breaking into the first team in 2001. During the 8 years he spent at the Riverside he made well over 200 appearances for the club, eventually captaining his beloved team before their relegation forced him to move to Aston Villa.

A transfer to Liverpool last year has left Downing with fluctuating form and lack of game time and a return home for Downing could reignite a career that was once so promising.
