While he hasn't solved every issue facing Liverpool's oft-leaky backline, Virgil van Dijk's made a huge impact on the Reds' defensive performances since his mid-season move from Southampton. He's brought a greater sense of physicality and calmness to the heart of defence, while making key contributions in possession as well.

With Loris Karius slowly emerging as Jurgen Klopp's preferred goalkeeper and Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold making the full-back berths their own, there's just one piece of Liverpool's defensive jigsaw yet to fall into place - van Dijk's perfect partner for 2018/19. There are already options inside the club and countless outside it too, but who should be lining up alongside the Dutchman most regularly next season? Football FanCast outline five suggested solutions...

Solution A - Joel Matip

There's no doubt the free signing from Schalke has proved great value for money, but he's probably not been as influential as many expected when Klopp snapped him up for nothing two summers ago. He's proved a little lightweight and inconsistent at times, but perhaps the biggest concern is that he's not the kind of domineering defensive leader who inspires resilience from those around him. A talented and experienced defender about to enter his peak years, but perhaps a little too passive to really take Liverpool's defence to the next level.

Solution B - Joe Gomez

Joe Gomez controls the ball

He's spent most of his Liverpool career at right-back but promising 21-year-old Joe Gomez appears destined to spend his best years at centre-half, where his athleticism and ability on the ball should render him a fantastic asset. The former Charlton youngster's potential is undeniable, but is he experienced enough to partner van Dijk on a regular basis next season? The England international still has lots to learn, especially when playing at the heart of defence.

Solution C - New Signing

At this time of year, it's easy to get carried away with the idea of new signings but Klopp has proved during his time at Liverpool that he invests in the right players for his system - Robertson, van Dijk, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah being the key examples. In terms of potential signings who could have a similar impact at centre-back for the Reds, Newcastle's Jamaal Lascelles and Burnley's James Tarkowski stand out as likely options after being linked by The Independent. Neither are exactly superstar defenders but have shown their potential in the Premier League this season.

Solution D - Dejan Lovren

Dejan Lovren in action for Liverpool

He's never really convinced since arriving from Southampton four years ago but Dejan Lovren has enjoyed his moments in a Liverpool jersey - particularly the winning goal against Borussia Dortmund in the 2015/16 Europa League campaign. The Serbian international has certainly looked more comfortable alongside van Dijk in recent weeks amid Matip's injury layoff, but it's clear he'll never be a truly top-class centre-half that can push this Liverpool team to the realms of Premier League title contention. A useful squad member, but not someone who Klopp can justify starting week-in, week-out.

Solution E - Ragnar Klavan

Ragnar Klavan was only ever signed to be part of Liverpool's wider squad but he's probably been more reliable than Lovren since moving to Anfield in summer 2016. The Estonian is vastly experienced, consistent, physical and decent on the ball - so could he be the shock answer to the biggest question lingering over Liverpool's defence at the minute? Aged 32, his leadership and experience could play a huge role in this largely youthful Reds team.
