Lars Bender

English interest in Lars Bender has waned since the Bayer Leverkusen vice-captain agreed new terms with the Bundesliga side at the start of the season.

But famed for his tenacious work-rate and tough-tackling, this term averaging 4.5 tackles per match in the Champions League’s group stages, the 24 year-old would address a significant gap in Liverpool’s squad, recently highlighted amid Lucas Leiva’s lengthy sideline spell through injury.

The energetic midfielder’s reputation is growing on the international scene too; featuring in his secondary right-back role for Germany, he racked up three goals in six outings during 2013, and is expected to make Joachim Lowe’s squad for the World Cup in Brazil.

With Bayer having hit their maxim over the past two campaigns, Liverpool’s champions status would certainly entice the Die Mannschaft man, but Bender’s price-tag, believed to be around the £25million mark, could be an issue.
