At 26-years-old, Martinez should be starting to reach his prime. The speedy forward has been prolific in his first season with FC Porto, scoring 25 goals in just 26 league games. After joining the Portuguese giants from Mexican side Jaguares for a reported fee of just $11million, Porto will be asking for two to three times that amount of money in order to sell their new star.
Alongside Radamel Falcao and Luis Muriel, Martinez has helped push Colombia into 6th place in the FIFA rankings table, ahead of both England and Italy. Unfortunately for the Reds, Martinez is also being watched by Borussia Dortmund, Manchester United and Juventus. Although unsurprisingly, it does mean that Liverpool’s lack of European football could hinder their chances of bringing Martinez to Anfield.
But with United looking at Lewandowski and Falcao, and Juve and Dortmund eyeing up moves for Javier Hernandez and Alvaro Negredo, Liverpool’s rivals may all overlook Martinez, opening the door for Brendan Rodgers.
