According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, Liverpool youngster Rafael Camacho is refusing to sign a new contract with the Reds and is of interest to Sporting Lisbon.

The Portuguese giants are only prepared to pay half of Liverpool's €10m asking price, however, although the Champions League winners will lose him on a free next summer if they cannot agree a new deal with the 19-year-old.

He appears to be a talented teenager given Sporting's interest, whilst Wolves are also keeping tabs on the situation, so why is Camacho being so stubborn with the Reds?

His reluctance to put pen to paper may be down to the fact that he was unhappy at being played at right-back on his first-team debut against Wolves in the FA Cup, and then again 12 days later against Crystal Palace on his Premier League debut.

Camacho took to Instagram to hint at his frustration at being played in defence, going out of his way to reinforce the fact that he is an attacker after he scored a hat-trick against Leicester's Under-23 side.

So, given his potential has attracted interest from some decent clubs, should Liverpool be doing more to keep Camacho at Anfield? Football FanCast's writers have their say on the situation...

"I have to doubt whether Rafael Camacho's head is in the right place after the Instagram fiasco a couple of months ago. There's no denying the quality the Portuguese has but I think it'll be for the best for all parties if Liverpool let him go. It's clear he's not going to break into an attack that includes Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, after both scored 22 Premier League goals last season, and the aforementioned social media activity suggests he doesn't want to play wing-back or full-back either. Bearing that in mind and the sheer volume of young talent already at the club - Ryan Kent, Harry Wilson and Rhian Brewster, for example - Liverpool should sell if a good offer comes in."

"Camacho is a bit of a weird one. It is not really clear if Jurgen Klopp trusts him and he gave him a combined 91 minutes in all competitions last season – 90 in the FA Cup loss to Wolves and one in the 4-3 Premier League win over Crystal Palace. He has been through the youth systems, playing for the Under-18s and the Under-23s, while he has been capped at various Portuguese youth levels too. This is a player with a clear upside but, if there’s a bid for him, one feels it should be accepted. Trent Alexander-Arnold is the club’s undisputed first-choice at right-back; Camacho isn’t about to dislodge him any time soon after the England international bagged 12 Premier League assists last season, and has already insinuated he wouldn't want to play at No.2 in the long-term anyway. Chances further forward, over Salah or Mane, are surely even more remote."

Charles Jones

"I don't think Liverpool should have to make an effort to keep hold of Camacho, simply because the reigning European champions in any season should not be pandering to an unproven teenager who is knocking back contract offers and seemingly disputing where he should be played in the starting XI. If anything, Camacho should be putting in the effort to stay at Liverpool, not the other way around. It should be an absolute privilege to play for the club right now after winning the Champions League and finishing second last season, so if he isn't convinced about staying - which would appear to be the case - Liverpool should just let him go. Albeit clearly lacking chances to do so, he’s done nothing to prove he's of first-team quality or that he'd be missed at the club."
