Ragnar Klavan joined Liverpool in 2016, but has only been a sporadic presence in the Reds’ line up under Jurgen Klopp, with the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez ahead of him in the pecking order at Anfield.

Now, according to Sky Sports, Klavan is close to sealing a switch to Serie A side Cagliari.

The 32-year-old will likely benefit from increased playing time with the Italian outfit, and Liverpool youngster Nat Phillips may now be afforded the opportunity to play a bigger part in the first team squad. 

However, there are concerns that the Estonian’s exit leaves Klopp’s defensive contingent thin on the ground in terms of experienced cover. 

Beyond experience, Klavan also provided quality depth and was generally very solid at the back when called upon.
