It is very rare that Liverpool fans and Manchester United supporters will want anything to do with each other, let alone one of their players.

Former United midfielder Shinji Kagawa was in action on Monday as Japan took on Belgium for a place in the World Cup quarter-finals, and his performance impressed some of Liverpool's following.

The 29-year-old attack-minded star sat just behind striker Yuya Osako and he was influential in the dramatic game.

Kagawa registered an assist as Japan shocked everyone by taking a 2-0 lead inside the first seven minutes of the second half.

Belgium managed to respond, though, as Jan Vertonghen and substitute Marouane Fellaini got on the scoresheet to set up a tense final 10 minutes plus stoppage time.

The match looked as though it was heading into extra-time and possible penalties until a delightful counter-attack from Belgium ended up with Nacer Chadli sliding the ball into the back of the net to send his nation into the final eight with a 3-2 triumph.

It was a cruel way for Japan to lose, but plenty of football fans, including those associated with Liverpool, were left impressed by Kagawa's display.

The midfielder spent just two seasons at United before returning to Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2014.

Kagawa failed to make a name for himself at Old Trafford, but some Liverpool fans hope that he is given a fresh chance in the Premier League at Anfield.
