According to Le10sport, Liverpool are close to agreeing a summer move for Monaco’s Thomas Lemar.
After it was suggested last month that Liverpool had cooled interest in Lemar, French reports are now claiming a deal is close to being agreed between the two clubs.
A recent report in The Times claimed Jürgen Klopp will seek a direct replacement for Coutinho this summer, something that Liverpool fans were aggravated he didn’t do during the January window, and the Frenchman certainly has the potential to fill the now-Barcelona man’s void.
And it now looks like Lemar could be heading to Anfield after all, as Le10sport claim the player is close to agreeing the terms of a move – with talks already taking place.
Lemar is just about the closest Liverpool could get to replacing Philippe Coutinho. The French midfielder, valued at £58.5million by Transfermarkt, has just two goals and seven assists in 18 league starts this season, but was a key figure in Monaco’s title success last year.
Most importantly for Liverpool, his versatility means he would improve both their starting line-up and their squad depth. Similarly to Coutinho, Lemar operates predominantly as a left winger, but could also play the No.10 role or as an advanced central midfielder, where Coutinho played for Liverpool this season. This would allow them to rotate players in attack without a drop off in quality.
The 22 year-old Frenchman is a set piece maestro, something the Reds have sorely missed since Coutinho left. He would create loads of chances for Liverpool’s fantastic front three and he isn’t afraid to take players on, something Klopp will love.
Likewise, his vision and creativity would make the Reds even more dangerous, and his age makes him an interesting project for the Anfield boss.
