Liverpool have concerns over Werner

Melissa Reddy has revealed that Liverpool have “concerns” over whether Timo Werner would adapt to not being a regular starter at Anfield.

What’s the story?

The Reds have been heavily-linked with the Germany international – it was even said by Nicolo Schira that they are in “advanced talks” with RB Leipzig over a move for the 23-year-old, who would cost €58m (£48.3m) through a release clause.

However, not only has Reddy revealed that the Anfield outift have not yet engaged with Die Rotenbullen over a potential attempt to sign Werner, but there are also concerns that he would struggle to adjust to not having an automatic place in the starting line-up.

Trouble

As it stands, Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane are amongst the top attacking trios in the world – between them, they have already managed 44 goals in all competitions this season. Their performances have contributed to Liverpool reaching two Champions League finals in a row, as well as their current procession to the Premier League title – they lead the division by 25 points and need just five more victories to be crowned champions.

In fairness, Werner is outscoring all of them this campaign – he has 25 goals in all competitions in Germany. However, given the Reds’ current success, there is no guarantee that any other player would get in to this Liverpool side – even the likes of Kylian Mbappe, who has also been linked.

When watching him play, Werner doesn’t seem to be lacking confidence, and a big-money move would usually mean he would be all but guaranteed a spot in his new side’s starting XI.

A number of Europe’s top clubs are said to be in pursuit, including Chelsea and Real Madrid, and a place in either of those teams would likely be easier to come by. But Liverpool is a different proposition and the club should think long and hard before any potential switch.

Frustration and resentment can easily build when players of Werner’s calibre know they’d easily be getting minutes elsewhere, and there’s little point in the Reds making any additions that could become disillusioned within a mere matter of months.

Meanwhile, Liverpool fans react to transfer link with 21-year-old who “Klopp would turn him into a beast”.
