Liverpool fans on Twitter have been piling the praise on Virgil van Dijk, after the centre-back’s excellent two-on-one defending against Moussa Sissoko and Heung-min Son helped keep his side in the game before their last-gasp winner.
Spurs had a glorious chance to take the lead when Sissoko and the South Korean international found themselves bearing down on goal with only the Dutchman back with them, as Anfield held its collective breath waiting for the seemingly inevitable to happen.
Has Alisson been Liverpool’s most important signing of the season? Check out the video below to find out why Jurgen Klopp thinks so…
However, the former Celtic man stood his ground and cut off the passing lane to Son, before narrowing Sissoko’s angle so he had to take the shot on his weaker left foot – as a result, the ball almost found its way out of the stadium.
Van Dijk’s heroics helped keep the score at 1-1, before Toby Alderweireld’s late own goal gave Jurgen Klopp’s men a huge boost in the title race.
Let’s see what the Liverpool supporters on Twitter have been saying about the pivotal moment…
Any other defender and it’s 2-1 to Tottenham. £75 million for Virgil Van Dijk is bargain of the century and I don’t want to hear a word. pic.twitter.com/uEgolDtV7x

Van Dijk on that 2v1 was some of the best defending I’ve ever seen in my life. Absolutely incredible footballer

he showed him onto his weaker foot whilst blocking the angle for the pass to the other player. He literally played it perfectly

VVD said in the post-match interview that his thinking was to cut-off the pass to Son who is a better finisher, and also to ensure that Sissoko is pushed to use his weaker left foot. Thinking & executing that under such pressure for me is absolutely incredible. The man is immense
