Liverpool have reportedly contacted the agent of Napoli centre back Kalidou Koulibaly.

What's the story?

According to Italian publication Il Matino, via The Daily Express, the Reds are considering a move for the towering defender.

The report claims the Anfield outfit have already contacted the player’s agent, and are plotting an official bid.

Koulibaly would cost a minimum of €110m (£97.79m) claims the report, though that price could be reduced if the correct player was offered in exchange.

Do they need him?

There’s no question Koulibaly is a phenomenal player, and a partnership with Virgil van Dijk would be a sight to behold with both players standing at roughly 6 ft 4 in.

However, the Reds simply don’t need a £97.79m signing in a position they already have great quality and depth in.

Jurgen Klopp has arguably the world’s best centre back in van Dijk and one of the world’s best young defenders in Joe Gomez, with two experienced internationals lying in reserve in Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren.

Considering the Reds were lacking a little creativity in midfield and depth behind their front three last season, their funds would be much better spent further up the pitch.

If Klopp does want to buff up his defensive ranks, then it is surely the flanks that require investment, where back-up left-back Alberto Moreno has already left and right-sided deputy Nathaniel Clyne will likely follow.

Koulibaly may be a dream signing for those fans who yearn to see van Dijk alongside an equally world-class partner, but it’s £97.79m more than the club needs to spend on that position this summer.
