It is surely now starting to become a question of when, not if, Liverpool win the Premier League title.

After their 2-0 win at home against Manchester United on Sunday evening, they are now 16 points of clear of second-placed Manchester City with a game in hand. If they keep on winning, there is a realistic chance they could even clinch the title at the Etihad Stadium, as well.

The celebrations after the match at Anfield against their famous rivals indicated that they are now starting believe they will be on top of the pile come the end of the season. On this day in particular, they have Virgil van Dijk to thank, not just for setting them on their way after scoring the first goal, but also for his overall display.

The header from Trent Alexander-Arnold's corner allowed the Netherlands international to show off his power and ability in front of goal. This is already his fourth goal of the season in the Premier League, which is impressive enough for a centre-back.

As is so often the case, he was a rock at the back as well. He made a team-leading eight clearances - only Luke Shaw (12) had more across the whole pitch - whilst he also managed two interceptions and one tackle. As ever, his passing was on point too, with only defensive partner Joe Gomez (90%) managing more than his 87% passing accuracy.

Van Dijk, of course, cost the Reds a huge £75m in January of 2018, and there were people in the football world who thought they had paid well over the odds to secure his services. He has proven those opinions to be completely off the mark, with him having helped his team to two Champions League finals - including one victory - as well as what now looks like a guaranteed league title.

His signing was a world-record deal for a defender at the time, and it was only broken last summer, by Manchester United no less. They brought in Harry Maguire from Leicester City for £80m, and it fair to say that he has failed to have an impact such as the former Southampton man. At Anfield this weekend, his 6.3 SofaScore rating was the joint-worst on the pitch and his side currently lie only fifth in the table. Of course, it would be unfair for him to shoulder all of the blame for both the result at Anfield and the Red Devils' struggles this term, but as the most expensive defender on the planet, you expect far more.

With his display, Van Dijk has made a mockery of United's transfer dealings, and his purchase now looks like even more of a bargain. As we said at the start, it is only a matter of time before he is on the podium with the rest of his teammates at the end of this term.

Meanwhile, Liverpool's famed trio could soon become a burden rather than a blessing.
