Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to react after The Athletic's James Pearce spoke about Timo Werner when answering some fans' questions in a Q&A session.

When responding to a supporter who stated that Divock Origi hasn't been the same player that he was last season, Pearce wrote a hefty reply - however, there was one nugget of information which has sparked the reaction from fans on Twitter, which you can see below.

The Athletic's Liverpool correspondent wrote: "The drop-off in quality between Liverpool’s first-choice front three and the back-up options is far too great. That’s why RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner is so high on the club’s list of transfer targets for this summer."

The Germany international would definitely represent a significant upgrade on Belgium international Origi, simply based on his stunning goalscoring achievements this term.

Werner has scored an eye-catching 27 goals in all competitions for Julian Nagelsmann's side this season.

The 23-year-old has netted 21 goals in 24 Bundesliga appearances, as well as four in seven Champions League outings - he also had two strikes in three DFB-Pokal appearances.

As you can see, he is deadly and has a phenomenal goal-to-game ratio this term.

Let's see how the Liverpool fans on Twitter reacted to Pearce's comments...

To kick off the reaction, these two supporters defended Origi.

While the former Lille man hasn't really been at it this season - he has just five goals to his name - his achievements last term were iconic and it could even be argued that he single-handedly dragged Liverpool to the Champions League final when the chips were down with his semi-final double against Barcelona.

He may not be Werner, but he still deserves respect from the Anfield faithful.

Elsewhere, these two supporters seemed to think that Pearce's comments meant that the German was definitely on his way to Merseyside - it is still far from a done deal with European giants such as Barcelona and Manchester United also eyeing up the former Stuttgart attacker.

Lastly, these two fans sought to highlight the fact that Liverpool's backup players aren't in keeping with their status as one of Europe's leading sides.

John even made the very valid point that the Africa Cup of Nations - set to take place mid-season in January next year - will rob Liverpool of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, so another forward would be very welcome.
