Joe Allen was never an overly popular figure at Anfield.
Seen as Brendan Rodgers’ man on the pitch during the Northern Irishman’s reign, the ‘Welsh Xavi’ got a harder time than most when things went wrong under the now Celtic gaffer. He somewhat repaired his reputation at Liverpool during the end of Jurgen Klopp’s first season at the helm on Merseyside, but he didn’t do quite enough to ensure he was needed for 2016/17, and was duly sold to Stoke over the summer.
This evening is the first return for the 26-year-old to his former home, and his opening 45 minutes was impressive to say the least. As Liverpool struggled to get a foothold in the game, the pint-sized playmaker buzzed around the centre of the pitch, winning back possession with regularity and playing neat passes when he was in control of the ball.
And it seems his showing so far has caused Liverpool fans to look back at him with fondness, with many confused as to why Klopp let him leave…
Why did we sell Allen? Take him over Henderson every day of the week.

Joe Allen is making a mockery of that Liverpool midfield. Kopp shouldn’t have let him go. #LIVSTK
