Saturday’s clash with Manchester City inevitably marked a difficult evening for Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley.
Three consecutive City defeats had raised expectations around Mauricio Pochettino’s side, but a combination of their own disorganised misgivings in the first half and City’s eagerness to recover the relentless form their Premier League title win will be remembered for saw Spurs fall decisively short of the best team in England this season – eventually succumbing to a 3-1 loss.
If there was one positive for Tottenham though, aside from the brief glimmer of hope Christian Eriksen’s fortuitous goal gave them just before the break, it came in the form of a cameo outing from January signing Lucas Moura – who Transfermarkt value at £25.2million.
The Brazil international was only on the pitch for 17 minutes plus stoppage time, but during that short burst had as much offensive impact as any of the players selected in Pochettino’s starting XI by completing three dribbles, taking one effort at goal and creating one chance. Hardly a resounding return, but decent work considering the limited opportunity Moura was allowed.
And that could be just enough to force a starting berth for Tottenham’s FA Cup semi-final clash with Manchester United on Saturday. Jose Mourinho has taken a notoriously pragmatic approach in big games this season with a deep backline and packed midfield, and the South American has already shown in his short Spurs career that he has the dribbling ability to weave through those kinds of defensive blocks.
The problem for Pochettino, of course, is how to actually fit the former PSG star into an attacking midfield that already boasts Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli, Heung-min Son and Erik Lamela. So, would you start Moura this weekend, Spurs fans?
