Man United and Arsenal dealt transfer blow

Manchester United and Arsenal have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, with the Bundesliga giants reportedly having offered a new contract, according to the Express.

The 23-year-old has just over 12 months to run on his current deal, and is said to be a top summer transfer target for both Premier League clubs.

La Liga giants Real Madrid and Barcelona are also reportedly keeping an eye on developments over the German international’s future.

But Dortmund remain desperate to keep hold of one of their prized assets, with chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke admitting he hopes to tie Gundogan down to a new deal before the start of the World Cup.

“Ilkay Gundogan is an important player of our squad we want to keep at our club,”¬†Watzke said.”We have submitted a contract offer to Ilkay Gundogan and we are expecting to hear from him about it.

“And we are certainly not going to need to wait until the summer to see him reply.”
The news will come as a blow to Manchester United especially, who have missed out on a host of top midfield targets since David Moyes took over last summer.
