Manchester United and Arsenal are set to go head-to-head in the battle to sign FC Schalke captain Benedikt Howedes this summer, according to reports from the Mirror.
The Red Devils and the Gunners are keeping a close eye on the Howedes, who is currently valued at £14million by the Bundesliga club.
United boss Louis van Gaal is extremely keen on reinforcing his defence, and the Mirror believe the Dutchman is targeting the Germany international centre-back.
Howedes only has two years left on his current contract and can also play at left-back, adding to his appeal.
Man United have been heavily linked with Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels, but could turn to Howedes as an adequate alternative.
Arsenal are also considering a move for Howedes, despite the £11.3million January signing of Gabriel Paulista from Villarreal.
The Gunners sent scouts to watch the 26-year-old play against Bayern Munich last Tuesday, in which he scored his side’s equaliser against the German champions.
