Man United & Arsenal set for January Dutchman battle

Arsenal and Manchester United are ready to go toe-to-toe for Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar in January, according to reports from The Metro.

The Dutchman is set to be a free agent at the end of the season when his contract expires, which has prompted talk of a winter move away from the Midlands.

Although Villa are desperate to keep ‘Concrete Ron’, the 29-year-old is thought to be aware that this may be his last chance to secure a dream move to a big Champions League side.

Both United and Arsenal are in desperate need of cover at the heart of their defences, and are attracted to the Villa ace’s experience and, likely, reduced valuation.

The Gunners appear to hold the upper hand due to their presence at the top table of European competition, however Louis van Gaal worked with Vlaar in the Holland national team – for whom he really impressed at the World Cup over the summer.

Villa Park officials are readying a big money deal to keep the imposing enforcer, who is likely to keep his options open ahead of the coming transfer window.
