Manchester United and Chelsea are on red alert for Inter Milan midfielder Esteban Cambiasso, with the Argentine’s contract at Inter Milan set to expire in six months’ time, according to reports from The Mirror.
The Argentine ace has been a key player at the San Siro for some time, but he now looks likely to leave the club at the end of the season on a free transfer.
Cambiasso is currently one of Inter’s biggest earners with an annual salary of £3.7m, and was expected to be offered a fresh deal to stay at the club before the end of June.
However, with the Serie A giants having recently been taken over by Indonesian businessman Erick Thohir there is expected to be a change in philosophy.
He is believed to be keen to cut the club’s wage bill, and sees the 33-year-old as a player no longer worthy of a vast salary.
He may be presented with a contract on a significantly lower weekly wage, but it’s unlikely that the former Real Madrid man will be open to signing such an agreement.
As a result United and Chelsea are both considering moves.
Jose Mourinho coached Cambiasso while at Inter, and is known to be a fan of his abilities after their successful treble-winning campaign in 2010.
United are also keen, with David Moyes desperate to add quality and experience to his midfield ranks.
