Had a bad night Arsenal fans? Olympiakos are a well-known side, but it’s hard to characterise them as anything other than European minnows. It was a bad defeat in any circumstances, but last night’s was a terrible thing for Arsenal.
We all know about Arsene Wenger’s penchant for finishing fourth. He just loves it. It’s a yearly excuse not to spend money and proclaim that his tactics and coaching ability are more than enough to take Arsenal to desired levels. So the threat of 4th place no longer bestowing the prize of a Champions League place is a sobering thought for Arsenal minds.
With defeats last night for both Arsenal and Chelsea, and with Manchester City losing away to Moenchengladbach in what would be their second straight Champions League defeat, Arsenal fans are probably cheering on teams they would never usually be cheering on….
And step forward Chris Smalling. Literally the last person you’d expect to be saving Arsenal by scoring a goal – in the opposition’s net, at least – has stepped up when it matters to put Manchester United ahead.
Yes, Chris Smalling is trying to save Arsenal’s beloved 4th place! Well, when your manager makes you the only team in Europe’s top five leagues not to sign an outfield player then you’ll take all the help you can get!
