Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt a blow after Saul Niguez signed a new extension with Atletico Madrid, clubatleticodemadrid.com reports.
The 21-year-old has been linked with a switch to the Premier League pair in recent months, but has now agreed a deal to stay put until 2021.
He has been in impressive form since his promotion from their academy this season, earning himself a regular role under manager Diego Simeone ahead of their Champions League final clash with Real Madrid.
The central midfielder revealed his happiness following his extension, with club sporting director Jose Luis Caminero also delighted to have reached an agreement for his stay.
“We are all very happy with the agreement reached with Saul,” he said.
“He is an excellent footballer, who has been trained in our academy and reinforces our commitment to the players in the club.”
United are currently in the market for a replacement to outgoing star Michael Carrick, and have been linked with Saul, while Tottenham are are also in the mix as they’re keen to add more quality into their squad after missing out on the league title.
He has featured 47 times in all competitions for his side this term, scoring nine goals while managing to providing another four assists.
