Man United urged to forget £35m German defender and sign Man City captain

Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has urged the club to forget about Mats Hummels and try to sign Vincent Kompany from Manchester City instead, Express reports.

Having played for both Manchester clubs as well as with Bayern Munich, he admits that Hummels isn’t a target Louis van Gaal should be targeting.

Hargreaves believes the German international is very composed at the back in regards to his passing, but isn’t physically adequate to command the United back-line.

He said: “He’s a super, super ball-playing centre-back but I don’t think he can defend, he’s too slow.

“He’s Franz Beckenbauer, the new version, a super passer but I think that if I’m Manchester United I want Vidic, I want Kompany.

“He’s the captain of Borussia Dortmund, they’re last in the Bundesliga. Is that the measuring stick for Manchester United? I’m not so sure.”

Plus, with Van Gaal failing to secure any proper centre-backs in the January window, he will have the entire second half of the campaign to rethink his summer plans.

The Red Devils have been heavily linked with the Borussia Dortmund man as well as Paris Saint-Germain’s Marquinhos on deadline day, but no agreements have been struck.

There have even been previous rumours saying the club were trying to bring back former captain Nemanja Vidic, while Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane is also one of the names on the short-list.
