Indeed, he’s been almost ever-present in the La Liga club’s backline for the last three seasons and has attracted plenty of interest throughout that period, most recently from Manchester City.

In March, the 6 foot 2 centre-half suffered a broken leg and a dislocated ankle that will rule him out of action until August – but ESPN claim the Citizens still rate Laporte as their top defensive target for the coming transfer window.

However, Bilbao are determined to keep their prized asset at San Memes for next season, so City will likely have to activate a £38million release clause to prize him away this summer.
