Football fans have taken to Twitter to react in hilarious fashion after Raheem Sterling was controversially awarded a penalty against Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday evening.
The England international appeared to accidentally kick the ground before tumbling over as a result of the contact, although the referee on the night, Viktor Kassai, pointed to the spot after inexplicably deciding that a foul had been committed.
As a result of the comical moment, in which even the 23-year-old looked embarrassed to have been awarded the benefit of the doubt, Twitter went wild.
Gabriel Jesus consequently dispatched the penalty to get the first of his three goals on the night. However, the humorous way in which the former Liverpool winger went to ground, coupled with the shambolic refereeing on show, gathered the most attention on a night when the Citizens smashed home six goals unanswered.
Let’s take a look at some of the funniest tweets after last night’s officiating horror show…
