Manuel Pellegrini has been busy adding to his attacking options so far this summer, with Fernandinho and Jesus Navas signed, and Alvaro Negredo all but a done deal.
Fiorentina’s Jovetic has been linked with City since the start of the transfer window and rumours that the Montenegrin is about to move to the Etihad Stadium have gathered pace in the last few days.
The clearest indication yet has been given by Aurelio De Laurentiis though, the president of Napoli, who have also been on the trail of Jovetic.
Regarding the situation, he commented: “Jovetic’s agent told me a year ago that the boy only aspired to go to England.”
With Napoli and also Juventus seemingly now not in competition for the forward, City just have to tackle Chelsea and Arsenal, who have both been watching the 23-year-old for some time.
However, Jose Mourinho has persisted that Wayne Rooney is his only target, while Arsenal appear to be pursuing several other attacking options, including Luis Suarez.
Jovetic has scored 40 times in 134 appearances for Fiorentina, and has been a major part of Montenegro’s attack, scoring 10 in 27 games.
